Pirates’ wild pitch lands in a weird place
The Pittsburgh Pirates had a miserable game on Wednesday night against the San Diego Padres. Pitcher Jeff Locke didn’t have his best stuff, and the Padres took advantage. Third baseman David Freese missed an easy grounder in the second inning that scored a run, and missed another in the third on a dive.
Freese’s defensive woes spread to Andrew McCutchen, who slid to make a catch in the third only to have the ball miss his glove. While he was running after it, another run scored. And to top everything off, Melvin Upton, Jr. robbed Matt Joyce of a home run while seeming to defy gravity. Not surprisingly, the Pirates lost 8-2.

With the game being played in Pacific Time, Pirates fans didn’t have a lot of positive video clips to look forward to when they woke up. But even they had to enjoy this one. In the third inning, one of Locke’s pitches to Jemile Weeks went rogue. It bounced a few feet in front of the plate and then appeared to ricochet back toward catcher Chris Stewart. But Stewart couldn’t find it anywhere. Where’d the ball go?!
Why, it landed in the umpire’s pocket, of course!
This is why baseball is so great. Even during the worst games or the most routine plays, there’s always a chance you’ll see something you’ve never seen before.
