Gronk and Richard Sherman attempt to make you laugh
In a marriage that seemed feasible only in reality television, the New England Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski and Seattle Seahawks’ Richard Sherman have teamed up for a series of digital shorts, the first of which debuted Thursday.
“In some ways we’re an odd couple,” Sherman told Yahoo Sports. “It was one of those things where opposites attract. This gave me another perspective of who he was, in a positive way.”
The series, comprised of 10 short clips promoting Oberto Beef Jerky, offers a new look at Sherman and Gronkowski. The shorts will be released throughout the year, with situations ranging from a discussion of modern art, kazoo playing and a head-to-head battle of Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em Robots.
The pairing would not seem obvious to most. There is history between their respective football clubs, most of which has been negative stemming from the “U Mad Bro” game in 2012 and the hotly contested Super XLIX in which a brawl broke out in the closing seconds.
Sherman, who has a communications degree from Stanford and is working toward his masters’ degree, is regarded as one of the league’s most outspoken voices. Gronkowski once boasted that he hadn’t read a book since the ninth grade. Sherman spent part of this offseason going after Roger Goodell’s disciplinary policy, while Gronkowski’s list of activities include partaking in a party cruise and joining Instagram.
Fun pairing, eh?
“When I heard it was with Richard Sherman I didn’t know what to expect going into the shoot,” Gronkowski told Yahoo Sports. “It’s always different when you meet someone in person and hang with someone for a few hours and do commercial segments.”
Said Sherman: “We’re all pros, we go out there and play the game as hard as we can for our given teams, but once we take the helmets off and it’s the offseason, you’re just a regular guy. People judge us off of a very barbaric sport and the emotions within said sport and that’s where it becomes confusing for us. It’s very unique to our game.”
Despite the bad blood between the teams, there’s a mutual respect that exists between the two.
“I immediately said yes because I knew it would be a lot of fun,” Sherman said. “I knew the kind of guy he was and what he would bring to the table. He’s ‘One-Take Rob’ so we didn’t have to do multiple takes. He had great energy and is one of those guys who’s infectious.”
And like that, the unlikely bond was formed.
“When we got together, we actually jelled pretty greatly,” Gronkowski said. “When I didn’t have a joke he came through and when he didn’t have one I did. I was surprised at how smooth it went.”
The rest of the series will be released throughout the year on Oberto’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
