Pistons' Stan Van Gundy has a beef with 'most fashionable' list
CLEVELAND — Stan Van Gundy believes he deserves more credit.
Not for his basketball acumen, but for his wardrobe. The entertaining coach of the Detroit Pistons started off Wednesday’s post-shootaround practice session with a question of his own. Since the assembled media had already spoken to Van Gundy two other times in advance of Game 2, reporters asked him if he had any suggestions. The veteran coach took the bait.
“I do have a question that you should have asked me, OK?” Van Gundy began.
“I got screwed, OK? And I want to make this clear: When Sports Illustrated came out with their 50 most fashionable people in sport, the fact that I wasn’t on that list is a travesty. I mean, I’m known for my fashion, am I not?”
Van Gundy helped usher in a more laid-back style on the sideline during his time in Orlando, wearing a black shirt under a suit instead of a tie. He became an internet sensation earlier this year when he rolled into a charity bike event rocking a Pistons hoodie and hat.
As reporters around him chuckled Wednesday, one noted that if he started wearing a tie or a bow tie he might crack the list. Van Gundy wasn’t buying it.
“No, but I mean, I’m known for my fashion,” Van Gundy countered. “I was very disappointed. That’s a question you should have asked.”
Even if his team is not able to overtake the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference playoffs this season, Van Gundy’s resurgence back into the spotlight has reminded everyone he is a top-seeded quote.
