Adrian Beltre does not like premature home run celebrations
Texas Rangers infielders Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre have baseball’s most interesting and entertaining relationship. They have deep discussions about who should be catching pop flies in their shared infield territory, and Andrus loves to troll Beltre about his head in general — how large it is, and how Beltre doesn’t like to have his head touched. (That particular fact has never stopped Andrus from constantly trying to touch his head, of course.) But during Tuesday night’s game against the Houston Astros their relationship got a whole new chapter, and that chapter is entitled “Never Celebrate Prematurely.”
In the sixth inning, Andrus yanked a pitch from Josh Fields deep into left field. The announcers thought the ball was going out, most of the stadium thought the ball was going out, and Andrus thought it was going out. But it didn’t go out. It bounced against the wall and Andrus had to pick up the pace. But while all this was happening, Adrian Beltre was leaning against the dugout railing, waving his arms and wildly signaling for Andrus to RUN! Andrus knew what he had done, and once he was safely at second base he recognized his teammates and laughed off his mistake.
Brett Nicholas was up next, and he hit a looper to right field for an RBI double. When Andrus came around to score, everyone in the dugout congratulated him as usual. But Beltre had no love to give, and greeted him with a cold, cold stare.
No one, not even Elvis Andrus, wants to be on the receiving end of that face-melting death glare.
