Jacob deGrom’s newborn son is doing better
It’s been a scary week for Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom. He left the team last Monday to be with his wife, Stacey, as she gave birth to their first child. Jaxon Anthony was born Monday night via c-section, but the happy even soon turned frightening as the baby had complications from the get-go.

Terry Collins couldn’t elaborate on what was ailing the newest member of the deGrom family. “It’s a real-life situation” was all he could say, and all anyone really needed to know. deGrom was placed on family emergency leave on Saturday so he could continue to stay with his wife and newborn son.
Thankfully, it seems like baby Jaxon is doing better.
“Last night I talked to him,” Collins said Sunday morning. “The baby is doing better. That was a good sign. I just told Jake he needs to get some rest and mix in a meal.”
Since he’s been placed on family emergency leave, deGrom will need to remain inactive for 3-7 days. He’ll get to stay closer to his family, but he’ll also have time to work through an injury. deGrom experienced right lat tightness last week and was scratched from his scheduled start agains the Miami Marlins. Had tiny Jaxson not intervened, deGrom could have been back in the rotation for the Mets’ series with the Phillies this week. As it stands, he’ll throw a simulated game on Tuesday, and possibly jump back into the rotation against the Braves over the weekend.
Jacob and Stacey hope to take Jaxon home from the hospital today. Let’s hope they can do that, and start making the transition to being normal, sleep-deprived parents with a healthy newborn son.
