Schwarber hurt in OF collision; Cubs can cope
The Cubs are a trendy World Series pick this season thanks to their plethora of talented young players. On Thursday night, one of those talented young players was hurt in a scary outfield collision.
In the second inning, left fielder/catcher Kyle Schwarber had to be carted off the field after colliding with Dexter Fowler. Here’s the play:
Schwarber was down on the ground for several minutes. The trainer appeared to be focused on his lower left leg, down around the ankle. Schwarber stood up and tried to walk off the field, but it wasn’t happening, so out the cart came.
The Cubs have since announced Schwarber has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle. X-rays were negative and will go for an MRI on Friday to make sure nothing else is wrong structurally. Fowler was not hurt on the play.
Schwarber, 23, hit .246/.355/.487 (128 OPS+) with 16 home runs in 69 games last year. He and Jorge Soler are slated to share time in left field this year.
