After missing cut, Ian Woosnam quietly retires from Masters
Tom Watson isn’t the only former Masters champion calling it quits this year at Augusta National.
Ian Woosnam, the 1991 Masters winner, declared after his second round on Friday that this is his final year as a competitor. Woosnam, battling back problems, shot 82-81 to miss the cut in his 28th and final Masters start.
“I am in pain all the way round so it’s time to say bye, bye,” said Woosnam, whose victory was his only ever top-10 Masters finish. “That’s my last go. I am not fit enough to play with my bad back.”
Masters winners have a lifetime exemption into the tournament.
The Welshman hasn’t made the cut at the Masters since a 44th-place finish in 2008, and it’s the only cut he has made in the tournament since finishing tied for 40th in 2000. The 58-year-old hasn’t played ain any other major since the 2005 British Open.
Woosnam plays on PGA Tour Champions and the European Seniors Tour. He won his first PGA Tour Champions event last year at the Insperity Invitational, but he has just one top-25 finish in four starts this year.
