Texas QB Jerrod Heard to miss the rest of spring practice
Texas quarterback Jerrod Heard is out for the rest of the Longhorns’ spring practice, but coach Charlie Strong said Tuesday that if Texas had more practices this spring, Heard would return.
Heard is competing to be Texas’ starting quarterback with Tyrone Swoopes and Shane Buechele. Heard suffered what the Longhorns have called a minor shoulder sprain last week.
“Jerrod is doing well,” Strong said. “We talked about that today. He is coming along very well. He just fell on his shoulder wrong, and had a sprain with it. He is going to be fine. We know that we only have a few more practices left, but if we were to go on longer, he would be back.
Texas’ spring game is April 16.

Strong was also asked how the injury affects Heard’s chances in the starting quarterback competition. Heard was the team’s best quarterback throughout the 2015 season. he completed nearly 58 percent of his passes at 7.64 yards an attempt while Swoopes completed 51 percent of passes and averaged 5.77 yards each attempt.
“It is not that [Heard] is getting it on the field, but he is getting it in the classroom,” Strong said. “He is learning in the classroom. I think that helps also, but just physically he can’t do what they are doing right now. Mentally, he can make sure that he is processing everything in the classroom.”
