Meet Trevor Story, baseball’s must-watch rookie
We’re only a few days into the 2016 MLB season, but no rookie has baseball people talking more than Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story. Troy Tulo-who? Jose Reyes-when? The shortstop talk in Colorado these days is centered entirely on Story, and if things go right, could be for years to come.

[He’s played in just two games, but already made history. In his MLB debut, Story homered twice of Arizona Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke, then he went deep again Tuesday night off Shelby Miller.
What will Story do next? Well, you can see for yourself. He and the Rockies play the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday at 3:40 p.m. in Yahoo Sports’ MLB Free Game of the Day. You can stream the game, completely free, at sports.yahoo.com or right here.
A little bit of historical context on Story’s quick start:

And if he homers again?
Keep an eye on Trevor Story. If @Rockies SS hits a HR today, he’ll become first player in history to homer in each of his first 3 games.

Yes, like the first player ever.
So who is Story and where did he come from? Certainly not out of nowhere. He’s a 23-year-old from Irving, Tx., who the Rockies drafted in the first round in 2011.
He came out of high school, so his rise to the pros wasn’t meteoric, but the Rockies liked him enough to trade Tulowitzki, their face-of-the-franchise shortstop, and not freak out too much about the future.
Story hit 20 homers with 80 RBIs last season between Double-A and Triple-A. He hit .279 and also stole 22 bases. But coming into this season, he was only Colorado’s No. 11 prospect, according to MLB.com,
His opening-day shot came because Jose Reyes, who the Rockies got in the Tulo trade is on leave indefinitely and facing suspension after an offseason domestic violence incident. In Reyes’ absence, Story hit .340 with six homers and 13 RBIs during spring training and won the starting job.

It’s too early to place any long-term expectations on Story. Reyes will come back, we assume, at some point. The quick start will, inevitably, slow down. But for now, Story is the rookie to watch in MLB.
