49ers’ Kaepernick could be Broncos-bound – if he agrees to new deal
As of this moment, the Denver Broncos have one quarterback on their roster with playoff experience in Mark Sanchez, but soon they could have a second: Colin Kaepernick.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday night that the San Francisco 49ers and Broncos have the parameters of a deal in principle in place that would send Kaepernick to Denver, but it is contingent on Kaepernick agree to a contract restructuring.
However, Schefter reported, the two sides are not close to an agreement. They will continue to talk and come to a common ground.
Kapernick’s $11.9 million base salary for 2016 became guaranteed on Thursday; that same day, Kaepernick met with Broncos general mananger John Elway at his home, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. It was at least the second time the two have met in recent weeks; Kaepernick is rehabbing three injuries in Vail, Colo. this offseason
The meetings were possible because San Francisco has given Kaepernick and his agents permission to seek a trade.
Kaepernick is set to have a salary cap of $15.9 million this season unless he agrees to a restructuring with the Broncos; currently, the Broncos could not fit the quarterback on their roster and remain under the cap without making other moves.
Kaepernick led the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII against the Baltimore Ravens at the end of the 2012 season, and to the NFC title game the following season, but struggled last year and was benched midway through the season.
