If you haven’t noticed, relief pitchers around MLB these days are looking more and more like dudes in bands. This is mostly because of facial hair, but not solely. Relief pitchers — like dudes in bands — often have the most style on a team.

So, for my trip to spring training in Arizona, I cooked up a fun game: MLB relief pitcher or dude in a band?
Armed with an iPad and pictures of both MLB relief pitchers and dudes in bands, we stopped baseball fans at various spring-training parks and asked if they could tell the difference. The results varied. Some fans definitely knew their baseball players from their band dudes. But others … not so much.
We even included one MLB relief pitcher, Chicago White Sox closer David Robertson, in our shenanigans to see if baseball players were any better at this than fans.
