Spring Headlines: Blue Jays tab Roberto Osuna as closer
When Drew Storen was acquired from the Washington Nationals, many expected his closing experience to give him the edge in the Toronto Blue Jays’ ninth-inning battle. It appears that never factored in at all though, as manager John Gibbons has instead opted to roll with 21-year-old Roberto Osuna.

Gibbons made the announcement Wednesday, specifically citing his “familiarity” with Osuna, who took over as Toronto’s closer last June and never looked back. Osuna converted 20-of-23 save opportunities, while posting a 2.58 ERA overall in his 69 appearances.
This news would seemingly make Storen Toronto’s key set up man, but that’s a role he’s been slow to embrace in the past. In fact, when Washington acquired Jonathan Papelbon last season and bumped Storen to the eighth inning, he did not take it well at all. It seemed to mess up his rhythm, which impacted his performance and upset the balance of Washington’s entire bullpen.
Storen did not comment on Gibbons’ decision on Wednesday. It’s safe to assume he’s disappointed once again, especially since he’ll be a free agent come season’s end. However, he’ll only hurt his value more if he doesn’t turn that disappointment into success. If he can use it as motivation, then there’s a chance everyone will win.
