Orioles scout plays one final game for cancer-stricken mom
This story from MLB.com’s Baltimore Orioles reporter Brittany Ghiroli is just about guaranteed to put a sting in your eye. Ryan Powell is the Orioles’ head of independent scouting. His mother, Wendy, was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer this past summer.
The battle with cancer has taken its toll on Wendy, but she knew that seeing her son put on a uniform and play baseball again would put a smile on her face during what’s been an incredibly difficult time. So Ryan, who spent four years in independent ball before turning to scouting, took the field one last time, playing his final inning in a minor-league intrasquad game at the Orioles’ complex in Sarasota, Fla., on Tuesday with his mom there to cheer him on.

Powell prepared several bats for the occasion all inscribed with “One more game for you, Mom” and Ghiroli writes that those bats will be “be autographed by Major League players and auctioned off for various cancer-related charities.”
Go read Ghiroli’s great article on what had to be an unbelievably moving scene and for more details on the bats that will be put up for auction to support a worthy cause.
