Tim Tebow hasn’t ruled out the thought of being a politician
It’s not too hard to see Tim Tebow becoming a politician because if you’ve ever met him, it’s hard to dislike the man.
Oh, the criticism of his play as an NFL quarterback is fair and deserved. And Tebow’s legions of fans can be, let’s say, “passionate.” But Tebow himself? Hard to find anyone who would truly hold a personal grudge against Tebow, one of the more polite people you’ll ever meet.
But maybe that makes him a bad candidate as a politician, in this current climate where being likeable doesn’t seem to be on any politician’s priority list. Nevertheless, the former Denver Broncos first-round pick and football legend said he has entertained the idea of getting into politics.
“It’s been crazy, hasn’t it? It’s been a whirlwind watching everything,” Tebow told Fox Sports about the possibility of getting into politics. You know, I don’t know in this time in my life, but if there’s a chance you can make a difference some day in something, then that would be intriguing.”
Nothing would turn someone who appears to be genuinely nice like Tebow into a cynic faster than a career in politics, so if he does get into that realm, we’ll see if he changes politics or politics changes him.
Tebow is just 28 but his football career is getting dimmer. The last time he played in an NFL regular-season game was 2012. Despite a couple of shots in the preseason, he hasn’t made a roster and he hasn’t gotten a contract during any of the past three NFL regular seasons. To this point he hasn’t shown the desire to try the Canadian Football League, and it’s hard to blame him. He’s done fine as an analyst at the SEC Network, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s wondering about a career beyond that.
Even though Tebow brings out a passion on both sides that really hasn’t been seen before or since, he’s still very popular. Fox Sports pointed out that a 2016 poll still had Tebow ranked as the fifth-most popular NFL quarterback, and he has thrown all of eight passes since 2011. And if he ever does get into politics, again, we wouldn’t be debating his throwing motion or whether he has the accuracy to make it as a quarterback in the NFL. There doesn’t seem to be much divisiveness on Tebow as a person. Maybe there is angst over the attention he gets or his football prowess, but a lot of that is out of his control.
Maybe it would be a good idea for us all if Tebow became a politician. He couldn’t be much worse than what we have in that realm already.
