Opening 25-year-old baseball cards with Brad Ziegler and Tyler Clippard
Brad Ziegler, the Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher, is one of the foremost card-collecting players in MLB. So, when I went to spring training armed with two unopened boxes of baseball cards from 1991, Ziegler was one of the guys I most wanted to open a pack.
[Season preview: Will D-backs bold offseason lead to success?]
In the first installment of this video series, you saw Rajai Davis dig break open a box of 1991 Score. I let Ziegler do the honors with my box of 1991 Donruss. He brought fellow D-backs reliever Tyler Clippard along, so they both opened a pack. Again, none of these cards are worth much. They’ve been sitting in my garage, unopened, purchased by grandma back when we collected cards together. Heck, the Donruss box still had the Costco sticker on it when I handed it to Ziegler to rip off the cellophane.
In this era, we’re mostly looking for Ken Griffey Jr. cards, but — spoiler alert — there we none to be found. We did, however, find a few cards that both Ziegler and Clippard dug, and we got into a discussion about Diamond Kings and the puzzle pieces that Donruss hoped would get us to buy more packs.
