Kane, Vardy ready for Euro 2016 challenge
England duo Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy expect to be marked men at Euro 2016, although both insist they are looking forward to the challenge that awaits them in France.
Kane and Vardy, who have 40 Premier League goals between them this season, both found the back of the net on Saturday as England recorded an impressive 3-2 win over world champions Germany.
Kane said he accepts that defenders at Euro 2016 may target him, but he is relishing coming up against some of Europe’s finest.
“Maybe I will be a marked man in the summer,” the Tottenham Hotspur striker is quoted as saying by The Guardian. “Again, that is football. If you want to be one of the top players in the world, you have to deal with that. I am happy for the challenge.
“I want to keep working hard, to keep getting better and better and to have more nights like that on Saturday, scoring more goals for England because they are special. You dream about scoring against teams like Germany on the big stage.”
Vardy echoed Kane’s comments, saying that a lot of hard work will need to be put in between now and the summer if he is to carry his Premier League form into the tournament in France.
“If people get to know how I play, that just means I have to go and work harder when I am on the training field,” the Leicester City forward said. “I have to look at ways I can still hurt them that, hopefully, they won’t think I will be able to do.
“It’s down to a lot of hard work now which I am more than happy to keep doing. It’s good to have as much competition for places as possible.”
Vardy, who came on as a substitute against Germany, is reported by the Daily Mirror to be in for a start against Netherlands on Tuesday alongside Daniel Sturridge and Theo Walcott, with Kane dropping to the bench.
