Drew Hutchison OK after being hit in head with own catcher’s throw
Drew Hutchison’s path to the Blue Jays starting rotation hit an unfortunate bump on Sunday.
The 25-year-old right-hander was forced to depart Toronto’s game against the Rays after he was struck on the head by a throw from his own catcher A.J. Jimenez.

With a runner on first and nobody out in the fifth inning, Tampa Bay’s Brad Miller attempted to steal second base on Toronto’s battery. Jimenez came up firing while Hutchison spun around to see what the result of the play would be. Unfortunately, Jimenez’s throw came out low and Hutchison ended up in the line of fire, taking the throw directly to the back of his head.
Hutchison was understandably stunned and was quickly attended to by team officials. He never left his feet though and was able to walk off the field under his own power, which was a highly encouraging sign.
Hutchison was in good spirits later on in the Blue Jays clubhouse, even joking about the incident with reporters.
Anytime there’s a blow to the head it’s reason for concern, especially with the knowledge we now have about concussions and head trauma. In this instance though, it appears Hutchison will be fine.
We’re also guessing he’ll be a little more aware next time he’s on the hill and there’s a stolen base attempt in progress. They’re all pros out, but one should never assume a good throw. Reds pitcher Keyvius Sampson can attest to that as well.
