Fernando Alonso walks away after F1 car goes airborne and flips
Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso climbed out of his car after he was involved in a terrifying crash with Esteban Gutierrez in the series’ season-opening race at Australia.
Alonso was making a move to pass Gutierrez on the outside entering turn 3 on lap 19 and the two collided. The impact ripped the right front tire off Alonso’s car and sent him into the grass. As his car careened towards the sand pit it got airbone, flipped over and hit the wall before coming to a stop.
Alonso emerged from his car with a slight limp but was cleared by Formula 1’s medical staff after the accident. His car was so mangled that it was hard to tell there was another car besides Gutierrez’s involved in the incident.
The crash spewed debris across the entire track, forcing the race to be halted for cleanup. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg won the race while teammate Lewis Hamilton finished second after falling from first to sixth on the opening lap. Haas F1’s Romain Grosjean finished sixth in the American team’s debut. Can any Stewart-Haas driver top Grosjean’s accomplishment in Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway?
