Brewers prospect hospitalized after being hit in the face by pitch
Milwaukee Brewers outfield prospect Rymer Liriano left Sunday’s game on a stretcher, headed for a Arizona hospital after getting hit in the face by a pitch.
In a sight that’s no less gruesome each time we see it, Liriano was struck under the eye by a pitch from Matt West of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Liriano fell to the ground and was eventually carted off the field after about 10 minutes.
Teammates described a bloody scene. Brewers manager Craig Counsell described the situation as “serious” while the team awaited results from the hospital.
Counsell understands the situation better than most. He was struck in the face by a pitch in 1998 and suffered a broken jaw.
The most high-profile moment like this in recent memory came in 2014 when Giancarlo Stanton was hit in the face by a pitch, carted off the field and missed the final month of the season. He suffered multiple facial fractures and dental damage.
Liriano, 24, is hitting .143 thus far in the Cactus League. He joined the Brewers in a January trade after starting his career with the San Diego Padres. Liriano ranks No. 21 among Brewers prospects, according to MLB.com.
