Look out! Reds’ catcher drills his own pitcher with a laser throw
yes, that Bearcats loss will sting a long, long time — was a pretty painful experience for Cincinnati Reds pitcher Keyvius Sampson.
Lost in a painful Friday for Cincinnati sports fans —It happened during their Cactus League battle against the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers. Sampson was simply going about his business, attempting to set down Milwaukee’s lineup in the seventh inning. Before he could complete that task though, he ended up wearing a throw from his very own catcher Chad Tromp.

Though Sampson probably could have done a better job clearing the area, he still should have been safely out of the line of fire. Instead, Tromp’s throw was well offline and appeared to strike Sampson right between the numbers.
Ouch!
We’re not exactly sure where Tromp was aiming his throw. Had it not hit Sampson though, chances are it would have hit the second-base umpire or ended up somewhere in right-center field. It was that bad.
Unfortunately for the Reds fans, this throw might be just a small sign of things to come. The Reds are rebuilding now, and though they should have enough veteran players around to keep things somewhat competitive, there will also be growing pains. They’d just prefer those pains not come in the form of real bumps and real bruises.
Fortunately for Sampson, he was no worse for the wear from a physical or performance standpoint. Despite three walks in the inning, he not only put up a zero to maintain his perfect spring ERA, he also picked up the victory.
As they say, no pain, no gain. Sampson definitely felt that pain, but it was all part of a good day’s work.
