St. Louis regional nearly tips off with illegal nets
Shortly before play began at the Midwest Regional in St. Louis, a minor equipment problem was averted, as the arena swapped out improper nets for correct ones. None other than CBS announcer and former Michigan State star Steve Smith spotted the problem:
Thankfully, nearby Fontbonne University, a D-III school, rode to the rescue with replacement nets:
Overlong nets are a transition team’s worst enemy, as they slow down the ball on made baskets and allow a defense precious seconds to set up. So all is square with the nets. As for the lids that some teams surely claim are atop the rims? Nothing to be done about that.
