Brent Burns beats Flames with ‘Gordie Howe Hat Trick’ (Video)
San Jose Sharks defenseman Brent Burns cuts an intimidating figure, but he’s never been a fighter in his career. In fact before Monday’s game against the Calgary Flames, Burns had only been in six regular season fights.
But against the Flames, things got feisty for the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Burns. He got into a fight with 6-foot-2, 207-pound Flames forward Garnet Hathaway after a scrum in front of his own net.

According to the above video, a lot of it was more holding and spinning, but luckily for Burns there was no accidental grabbing of his beard. Burns bloodied Hathaway in the fight.
Burns ended up with a Gordie Howe Hat Trick scoring his 24th goal, which leads all NHL defensemen, and notching the game-winning assist in a 2-1 overtime victory.
“We’re creatures of routine, I think,” Burns said after the game. “We do the same thing every night. I think I went 19 games without a goal. You just kind of ride that roller coaster. The guys have been playing well. They’ve been making good plays and a lot of times I’ve been the recipient of a lot of good plays.”
Below is the goal:
Here is the assist on Joe Pavelski’s OT winner:
“(Burns) had some good speed. I saw he was getting by his guy. I was hoping he saw me out in front.” Pavelski said.
With the win, the Sharks moved to 78 points, just two behind the Los Angeles Kings for second place in the Pacific Division. The Sharks are 15-0-0 in games where the team’s had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick.
