Housecleaning continues, Eagles send DeMarco Murray to Titans
If you are on the Philadelphia Eagles and were acquired by Chip Kelly, watch your back. It seems like the Eagles are intent on getting rid of most reminders of the Kelly era.
Kiko Alonso and Byron Maxwell were shipped to the Miami Dolphins, and later on Monday the Eagles were finishing up a trade that would send running back DeMarco Murray to the Tennessee Titans, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The trade can be official on the first day of the league year, which is Wednesday.
Murray will go down as a terrible signing. He came over from the Dallas Cowboys after winning NFL offensive player of the year in 2014, then struggled mightily after signing a five-year, $40 million deal. Murray had 702 yards, averaged 3.6 yards per carry and was eventually benched. Most teams probably could have seen that coming, after Murray had an insane workload for the Cowboys the year before, but the Eagles ignored it.
So too, apparently, are the Titans. It’s not clear what a high-priced running back who had 392 carries two seasons ago and struggled badly last season does for a Titans team that finished with the worst record in the NFL last year. But at least Murray, in theory, should improve the running game and take some pressure off of quarterback Marcus Mariota. It seems like an odd move, but perhaps Murray can rediscover his Cowboys form in a new offense. The Titans were perilously thin at running back last season, though they were bad at many positions in 2015.
Murray, like some other Kelly acquisitions, will be one-and-done in Philadelphia. Not all Kelly acquisitions are being shipped off (Sam Bradford got $36 million to stick around), but the housecleaning has begun for the Eagles.
