Trezevant star Cordarrian Richardson chooses Clemson – Memphis Commercial Appeal
Teli White says he’s rarely had a player with the ability of Cordarrian Richardson. Now, one of the best college teams in the nation will get to see his talents up close.
Richardson — who led the Bears to the 2A state championship in December — has verbally committed to Clemson, which lost to Alabama in the BCS national championship game to conclude a 14-1 season. Verbal commitments are non-binding but Richardson, a rising senior, is expected to make it official on signing day in February of 2017.
“He’s solid,” said White. “He visited (over the weekend) with his parents, met some of the players and really enjoyed himself. He wanted to go there and see if it was everything he thought it would be and it was.”
Richardson certainly fits the Clemson mold. At 6-1 and 220 pounds, he has the strength to get tough yards inside while boasting the speed to make plays in space. He had a host of offers, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Memphis, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Nebraska and Tennessee.
“He’s 220 but he runs like he’s 180,” said White. “That’s the scary part. He does things on the field and you look at him and say ‘dude, how did you do that?’ And he says, ‘I don’t know.’
“That’s how you can tell the special ones. It just comes natural.”
Richardson ran for 2,239 yards and scored 18 touchdowns while adding five more scores on punt returns as Trezevant finished 12-3. In the 40-35 victory over Marion County that gave the Bears their first state title in school history, he a BlueCross Bowl record with 342 yards on the ground, while scoring three touchdowns and throwing a fourth.
He was runner-up in the 2A Mr. Football voting and was the only junior among the five finalists for the Pepsi Best of the Preps offensive player of the year award.
Richardson joins Cordova lineman Quintin Bohanna (Kentucky) as local standouts in the class of 2017 who have announced their commitments.
