Maybin was hit by a pitch during Wednesday’s game, but did not believe the injury to be serious at first. The team sent him for a scan, which revealed the fracture.
Maybin was acquired by the club during the offseason, as was expected to be the team’s full-time starter in center. After losing 2013 and 2014 to injuries, Maybin stayed healthy last season and hit .267/.327/.370 over 505 at-bats.
With Maybin sidelined, the club will now turn to Anthony Gose. Last year, Gose posted a similar slash line, hitting .254/.321/.367 over 485 at-bats. However, he had some issues defensively last year, and he can’t hit lefties. Gose has hit just .202 against southpaws over his career.
The Tigers may have attempted to fortify their club for one more run this offseason, but the team lacks depth. Maybin’s injury exposes some of that, though Gose can be an adequate replacement in the short term. If the team loses someone at a more significant position, though, it could spell disaster.
