Marvin Harrison on Terrell Owens and Hall of Fame: ‘Hell with him’
Marvin Harrison was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame last month, and he’s not particularly concerned with anyone who wasn’t. He’s particularly unconcerned with one fellow receiver who has loudly expressed an expectation of belonging in Canton and a frustration at not being selected: one Terrell Owens.
Speaking nationally for the first time since the Hall of Fame announcement, Harrison told the Talk of Fame show that he wasn’t exactly impressed with Owens’ credentials as compared to his own.
“The person who was supposed to get in got in. And that was me. If he didn’t get in, that’s his problem. He can talk all that other bull[expletive] like he’s been doing. That’s on him. But I’m in. My jacket is gold. I will look in the rear view for nobody. So he can get his ass in whenever he gets in … if he gets in. If he doesn’t get in too bad. The hell with him.’’
It’s tough to tell exactly how much of this is just trash-talking and how much is true venom from Harrison. Listen for yourself and decide:
Upon learning that he had not been selected in his first year of eligibility, Owens initially reacted with grace on Twitter:
However, as time went on, Owens grew increasingly more hostile publicly, noting the breadth of his achievements and contending that former Vikings receiver Cris Carter had “begged” his way into the Hall and that Owens deserved enshrinement.
For the record, Owens had 1,078 receptions for 15,934 yards, second in NFL history, and his 153 touchdowns rank third all-time. Harrison had 1,102 receptions for 14,580 yards and 128 touchdowns, and was elected in the third year of his eligibility.
