Some pig: Yoenis Cespedes sent prize-winning hog to the butcher
The life of a prize-winning hog can be tragic, and change rapidly. One day, you’re winning a prize at a local county fair. The next, you’re sitting on a plate during someone’s breakfast.

That’s the fate of New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes’ prize-winning hog. Cespedes, who purchased the animal for $7,000 on Sunday, has already sent the hog to the butcher, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.
While the outcome may be disappointing for some, it’s not entirely unexpected. Cespedes has a history of participating in pig roasts. Shortly after he left Cuba, Cespedes’ representation released a now infamous 20 minute video of the outfielder showcasing his skills for major-league clubs. At the end of that video, there’s footage of Cespedes roasting a giant pig on a spit at a family barbecue. (Don’t click the link if you prefer not to see a giant pig roasting on a spit.)
Unfortunately, the hog will not go on to be the next Hank, the Milwaukee Brewers dog mascot who stumbled into spring camp a few years ago. It would have been nice to see a club rally around another animal mascot, even if Hank is currently embroiled in crazy conspiracy theories.
And any thought of Cespedes riding the hog to camp can also be scratched off the list. We suppose that became apparent after manager Terry Collins said “fun time’s over” at Mets camp, but we still had hope that it could happen. He can still drive his fancy cars, so we’ll have to get by with those for now.

Some good can still come of this, though. Not for Jeurys Hamilia, which is what we’re calling the hog now, but for the club. If Cespedes chooses to hold a pork roast for the club, that could be viewed as a great team-building activity. Look, we’re just as sad about the hog as everyone else. We’re just trying to look at the bright side now.
