Royals' Dyson (oblique) may miss multiple weeks
Royals outfielder Jarrod Dyson suffered a right oblique injury during Wednesday’s 6-2 spring loss to the Rangers (recap). He appeared to hurt himself taking a swing during his second-inning at-bat, and was removed from the game.
Following the game, manager Ned Yost told MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan that Dyson is going for an MRI and they will “know more in the morning.” Yost did acknowledge Dyson is likely to miss at least two weeks. Oblique injuries are tricky. They’re very easy to aggravate if they aren’t completely healed.
Dyson, 31, is slated to serve as Kansas City’s starting right fielder this season after spending the past few years as their fourth outfielder. He’s a career .255/.320/.343 (87 OPS+) hitter fully capable of stealing 30-plus bases and playing outstanding defense.
The Royals re-signed Alex Gordon over the winter but did let Alex Rios walk. If Dyson is unable to start the season on time, Paulo Orlando will likely step into right field. The team has Travis Snider in camp as a nonroster player as well.
