Hammond replaces injured Anderson, Senators fall short in comeback
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: a goaltender was injured in a game with the St. Louis Blues.
PLOT TWIST – the goaltender injured is on the opposing team.
Late in the second period, with the Ottawa Senators down 3-1 to the Blues, starting goaltender Craig Anderson drops down to block a wraparound attempt by Magnus Paajarvi. The puck deflects out of the crease. Anderson kicks the right leg out in a half-split looking move. When the goaltender attempts to get up, he falls over.
The referee stops play when he notices Anderson laying on the ice. After consulting with the trainer, Anderson leaves the game and is replaced by Andrew Hammond.
Hammond was solid for the Sens despite coming into the game cold. He saved all 17 shots he faced.
Ottawa decided to make the game interesting with less than three minutes to go. Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored to cut the deficit to one.
Pageau had the game tying goal on his stick with 33 seconds to go, but Jake Allen made a fantastic glove save.
It appeared the Blues were going to skate away with this one, but it was Pageau again who’d come up huge for the sens. With 0.1-second left on the clock, the forward roofs the puck – tie game.
Both Allen and Hammond were stellar in overtime, and the game would be decided in a shootout.
A shootout that needed 22 shooters in order to get a decision.
Thankfully, Patrik Berglund put everyone out of their misery on the 22 attempt. With the win, the Blues, Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars are even at 83-points in the Central Division.
