Danny Willett could skip Masters for birth of child
Danny Willett is in next month’s Masters, but the Englishman may not tee it up at Augusta National.
Willett and his wife Nicole are expecting their first child, a son, during the week of the year’s first major. The world No. 15 said on Tuesday at the WGC-Cadillac Championship that he won’t make the trip to Augusta if the child isn’t born by April 7, when the tournament starts.
“I’m looking forward to Augusta, if I get to go play,” Willett said. “Obviously Nic’s due that week, so all depends on how our little man is fairing, if he fancies coming out early on, it would be great, but if not, I won’t be playing.”
If the baby is born during tournament week, Willett will consider flying in to play, even if it limits the time he has to prepare. Inducing the birth isn’t an option either.
“Yeah, hopefully, yeah, we have a nice, easy smooth early birth and I can get out there, even if I go and fly out Tuesday, Wednesday,” he said. “It’s one of the golf tournaments you don’t really want to miss.”
However, Willett won’t make the decision to go to Augusta and try to make it back to his wife in time for a birth during the tournament week.
“You can’t get back in time,” he said. “There’s plenty more Masters.”
Willett made his Masters debut last year, finishing tied for 38th place.
