Joe Maddon traveled back to the ’70s at Cubs camp
Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon is known for keeping things loose. During his tenure with the club, Maddon has brought a magician to the clubhouse, and hosted a petting zoo at Wrigley Field. He’s also known for encouraging his players to dress in costumes during road trips.

Maddon was up to his antics again Monday, and managed to combine the best of both of those qualities. Quite frankly, we’re not entirely sure what Maddon had planned. All we know is he drove a vintage ’70s van to camp, and hired a clown to perform. Oh, and Maddon dressed like this:
Pretty groovy. We’ll get to the clown eventually, but we have to focus on Maddon first. Between the van and the outfit, he looks like he could be a member of the Scooby-Doo crew. If they ever decide to do a reboot set in modern times, we’re pretty certain Maddon could pass for Shaggy. He already has a Mystery Machine, so casting Maddon would actually save money.
As far as the clown is concerned, we’re not entirely sure what happened there. We know there was a clown at camp, and it did … something … but all we have to go on is the following video.
Did the clown arrive in Maddon’s van? Is that Maddon dressed as a clown? What is the clown doing in the video? It’s tough to see with the players there.
We have a fair amount of questions. And given that Maddon is involved, we’re not sure we’ll have answers. Sure, sometimes his antics become public and a huge topic of discussion, but we also wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs decided this was a super secret team building exercise they can’t talk about.

In his time with the Cubs, Maddon has now hired a magician, a petting zoo and a clown on separate occasions. A pattern is starting to emerge, and we think we know what’s he’s building toward. At some point during the 2016 season, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the circus briefly take over Wrigley Field one day. There’s no better team-building activity than swinging from a trapeze.
