The Savannah Bananas are your new favorite baseball team
Two weeks ago we tried to help the new collegiate summer league team in Savannah, GA come up with a name.
The Savannah team, which will debut in the Coastal Plain League — a summer wooden-bat league that helps college players stay sharp and gain attention — in June, called on fans to give them suggestions. From there, the team narrowed down the nearly 1,000 entries to the five best and perhaps cleanest choices, and then it was up to the fans again to vote on a winner.

Well, we have a winner all right, and on Thursday the name became official.
Say hello to the Savannah Bananas, your new favorite team.
Bananas beat out the Anchors, Seagulls, Ports and Party Animals, and we probably shouldn’t be surprised. Though we thought it would be cool if they went with something a little more meaningful from a historical perspective, seeing the name in print and the new logo now, we can’t argue with Bananas either.
Savannah Bananas rolls right off the tongue, and it probably lends itself to more marketing and promotional opportunities, which is always important. Just ask team president Jared Orton.
“There’s no other brand. It’s a perfect fit. No other city could be the Bananas.”
At least no other city north of Havana.
“We think Savannah deserves something special.” added team owner Jesse Cole. “We’re going to do a lot with bananas.”
Sounds delicious.
According to the Savannah Morning News, which sponsored the naming contest, a woman named Lynn Moses submitted the name “Bananas” into the contest. Again, they had nearly 1,000 entries, so it took a great name to stand out from the pack. Now she’ll be forever linked to baseball in one of the coolest ways possible, to go along with free passes to games this summer.

See folks, it pays to get involved. You never know who’s paying attention or when one of your ideas will catch on. Here’s one thing to remember though, if you can make it rhyme and it somehow involves food, chances are your idea will be much more well received.
