Kings add Kris Versteeg from Hurricanes for prospect, pick
Kris Versteeg disappeared from the Carolina Hurricanes bench in the second period during their Sunday matinee against the St. Louis Blues. A few hours later, we found out why.
Hurricanes GM Ron Francis was active, dealing another potential UFA after sending Kris Versteeg to the Los Angeles Kings for prospect Valentin Zykov and a conditional fifth-round pick. Not long after trading captain Eric Staal to the New York Rangers for picks and a prospect, Francis added some more to his cupboard.
Versteeg scored 11 times and recorded 33 points in 62 games for the Hurricanes this season after coming over in a September trade from the Chicago Blackhawks.
The 20-year-old Zykov, a 2013 second-round pick, tallied seven goals and 14 points in 43 games with the AHL’s Ontario Reign.
With Marian Gaborik out for the forseeable future, GM Dean Lombardi was in the market for a rental winger. The Kings reportedly pursued Teddy Purcell before he was dealt to the Florida Panthers on Saturday afternoon.
