Luke Hochevar photobombing Ian Kennedy is the best spring photo
Throughout the offseason, Major League Baseball players have one date circled on their calendars. No, it’s not camp report date, or the first game of spring training. It’s photo day.
Maybe that seems silly, but think about it for a minute. On photo day, players have to present themselves as fans will see them for the entire season. That picture is displayed on humongous video boards all over the country for months.
While some players take this tradition seriously, getting last minute haircuts and elaborate beard trims, some take it as a chance to be silly.
The current leader in the clubhouse in that final category belongs to pitcher Luke Hochevar of the Kansas City Royals. Hochevar noticed new teammate Ian Kennedy getting his picture taken, and decided he just needed to get in on that action. The results are glorious.
Kennedy is clearly unaware what’s going on behind him, making him an unfortunate victim here. The picture reminds us of the “Stepbrothers” movie poster, which makes us think about a buddy-comedy baseball movie.
Kennedy is a renegade pitcher who thinks he’s above the law. His methods are unorthodox, but he gets results. After years of reckless behavior on the mound, the Royals brought in the one man who can keep Kennedy’s emotions in check: His goofy brother. Watch as the two get up to strange hijinks, possibly involving the park sprinkler system, or filling the rosin bag with jelly beans. Coming to theaters this fall: Brotherly Glove. (The title works better if they played for the Phillies, but we’ll just have to deal with that for now.)
It wasn’t all fun and games at Royals picture day, of course. These are the world champs we’re talking about. MLB.com was able to grab some video of the event, which prominently features first baseman Eric Hosmer and infielder Christian Colon. There are some shenanigans in the video, but it mostly provides a look at what players go through on photo day.
And in case you needed a reminder that the Royals are the champs. Well, Hosmer has you covered.
We here at The Stew have you covered as well. This spring, we’ll post the best spring photos over on our “Yahoo for Spring Training” Tumblr page. We’ll also continue to post content on the official Big League Stew Tumblr as well.
Want to know who’s sporting a crazy mustache this spring? Or just want to see cool, artsy shots of baseballs sprawled across the infield? Don’t worry, we have you covered.
And while pictures pale in comparison to games, rest easy. Photo day means actual spring games are just around the corner. We’re so much closer to baseball, and that makes us about as happy as Luke Hochevar.
