COLLEGE STATION, TX – FEBRUARY 24: Tyler Davis #34 of the Texas A&M Aggies looks to pass in front of Gavin Ware #20 of the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Reed Arena on February 24, 2016 in College Station, Texas.
1. Second time around. A&M and Mississippi State played to a 61-60 A&M victory on Jan.6, with the Aggies having to overcome a season-low shooting percentage of 30.6 percent and a nine-point deficit to claim the game.
The Aggies held the lead in their second meeting for nearly 30 minutes, but the game did feature 11 lead changes and remained tightly contested in the final minutes of play.
Jalen Jones gave the Aggies a 63-60 lead with two minutes remaining, failing to convert the and-one opportunity at the free throw line. Quinndary Weatherspoon quickly countered for the Bulldogs with a 3-pointer to tie the game, followed by a Danuel House score to put the Aggies back up by two.
After a scoreless first half on 0-of-6 shooting, House got hot in the second half to put up all 16 of his points in the game.
With A&M up 66-64, Bulldogs senior Craig Sword tied things up with a jumper in the paint. House once again drove in the paint, picking up the foul to give the Aggies a chance at the lead with just two seconds remaining. As he did last week against Kentucky, House sank both shots from the line and gave his team a 68-66 lead.
Defense came up big as Tonny Trocha-Morelos deflected the Bulldogs attempt at an inbound pass to seal the victory.
2. Pla-no Games. The freshman duo of D.J. Hogg and Tyler Davis handled the bulk of the offense on Tuesday night, particularly in the first half. Scoring got off to a slow start for both squads. The first bucket of the game came nearly three minutes in when Mississippi State’s Quinndary Weatherspoon lit up the scoreboard for a 2-0 lead with 17:19 remaining.
Davis went to work for the Maroon and White, scoring the first three points for the Aggies and five of the first 12. Then, coming off the bench, Hogg went to work. He scored eight consecutive points for the Aggies including a pair of made 3-pointers to give A&M a five point lead. With just over five minutes remaining before intermission, the lead rose to a single point shy of double digits thanks to the Plano duo penetrating the paint for high-percentage layups.
At the half, the duo combined for 17 of the Aggies 33 points (Hogg 10, Davis 7) to head into the locker room with a 33-29 lead.
Though Hogg faded in the second half, Davis made up for it on both ends of the court. The 6-foot-10 freshman finished with 15 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots in the conference matchup. Meanwhile, Hogg recorded 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
3. March toward March. After a mid season slip up that featured five losses in six games, Billy Kennedy’s Aggies are now winners of three straight contests, including an overtime thriller against Kentucky last Saturday.
They are 5-1 against opponents inside the top 32 of NCAA RPI, with the lone loss coming to No. 25 South Carolina on Feb. 6.
While the Bulldogs aren’t toward the top of the RPI rankings (151), the win represents the Aggies’ 10th SEC victory of the season and further strengthens their case for a high seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Up next for A&M, it travels to the Mizzou Arena to take on the Missouri Tigers. Head coach Kim Anderson’s squad currently claims a 10-18 record with two wins coming in the Southeastern Conference. However, all 10 of the Tigers’ victories have came at home this season.
