Rose takes cautious route, sits due to hamstring
CHICAGO — Bulls point guard Derrick Rose did not play in Wednesday night’s 109-104 win over the Washington Wizards because of right hamstring tendinitis.
Rose said before the game that the move to sit was precautionary and that he didn’t “want to take any risk.” The right hamstring has given him trouble off and on throughout the season.
“A little bit [Tuesday] after we practiced, while we were practicing,” Rose said of when the hamstring became an issue again. “Then this morning, that’s when I really felt it.”
Rose didn’t seem to think the injury would keep him out many games. He has missed eight games this season.
“I’m taking it one day at a time,” Rose said. “Try not to risk it. That’s what it’s all about, just reading my body.”
Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg defended Rose’s cautious approach.
“He’s battled through some aches and pains,” Hoiberg said after the game. “Tonight it was just a more specific spot. Again, the hamstring tendon has been bothering him some, and when he’s had that tendon [issue] we have taken a cautious approach.”
Rose entered Wednesday’s game playing the most consistent basketball of his season.
“I love the way I’m playing,” he said. “I feel like I’m playing to win. I feel like I’m in a good mood, a great place mentally. Just trying not to risk all of it by just going out there and just playing crazy.”
Rose agreed he is taking a more cautious approach this season after all the injuries he has suffered the last four years.
“I think that’s with anyone,” he said. “When you look at my situation, what I’ve been through, it’s like the norm. My body’s just got to get used to moving and the way I want it.”
While Rose acknowledged it was his decision to sit out, Hoiberg said the decision was made after he and Rose discussed the issue with the Bulls’ medical staff.
“Obviously, look, Derrick knows his body,” Hoiberg said. “And with the hamstring the way it was — he came in and talked to me first and told me the symptoms and everything. I was fully on board to take the cautious approach with it, and then after he met with the doctor we all got together and made that determination.”
Bulls center Pau Gasol did play after missing Tuesday’s practice with flu-like symptoms. He had 10 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists.
