David Ross gets a hotel suite on the road thanks to Jason Heyward
Veteran Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross is retiring after the 2016 season, bringing to an end a 15-year major-league career.
Jason Heyward is making sure the 38-year-old Ross goes out in style. The two played together in Atlanta from 2010-12 and were even lockermates when Heyward was a rookie in 2010.
Heyward hasn’t forgotten the valuable lessons about playing in the big leagues he picked up from Ross, who is universally respected around baseball for his presence in the clubhouse.

Now that they’re once again teammates, Heyward – fresh off signing an eight-year, $184 million deal with the Cubs in the offseason – has splashed some cash to get Ross a sweet retirement gift: a hotel suite for every road game this season. The gesture really hit home for Ross.
“That’s one of the first emotional moments I had in the offseason,” Ross said Monday. “[Heyward] texted me this nice long message about supposedly what I’ve done for him. That was cool to start reflecting back and people you’ve played with start saying nice things.”
Heyward’s not the only Cubs player invested in Ross’ retirement tour, either. Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant opened an Instagram account, lovingly named “@GrandpaRossy_3,” to document Ross’ final year as a player in the majors in pictures.
Ross doesn’t have gaudy stats, but he’s clearly made an impact on those with who he’s played the game alongside all the years.
