David Ortiz has one request for Yankees fans in his final season
The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry cuts deep. David Ortiz knows that better than almost anyone, having been a central figure in the feud between baseball’s behemoths for more than a decade.
So as he enters his final major-league season, Ortiz has one request and only one request for the Yankees fans he’s terrorized over the years with his monster home runs and flair for the dramatic.
“You know what I want most of all?’’ Big Papi told The Post on Tuesday at JetBlue Park. “I would love it if the fans at Yankee Stadium gave me a standing ovation.’’

It would be the ultimate sign of respect for a player that’s meant so much to the rivalry. And really, Yankees fans would just be returning the favor: the Fenway faithful cheered for Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera when they played in Boston for the final time.
The Red Sox roll through New York from Sept. 27-29, the last week of the regular season, and Ortiz should get his wish and receive an appreciative reception from Yankees fans. It’s their turn to honor a retiring great.
However, if the American League East title is still at stake and both teams are still in the race, don’t expect the applause to linger deep into the game. Above all else, what Ortiz really wants is to make one more postseason run and win a fourth World Series championship. If the opportunity presents itself, you know Papi’s not going to be shy about sticking it to the Yankees like he always has.
