NHL Three Stars: Jumbo’s 4-point night; Jenner leads Blue Jackets
No. 1 Star: Joe Thornton, San Jose Sharks
Jumbo scored twice and assisted on two others as the Sharks doubled up the St. Louis Blues 6-3. Thornton was one of three players with a pair of goals, joining Tomas Hertl and Logan Couture. He ended the game with this lovely no-look backhand empty-net goal:
No. 2 Star: Boone Jenner, Columbus Blue Jackets
A pair of goals from Jenner and two points each from Scott Hartnell, Alexander Wennberg and Ryan Murray helped the Blue Jackets get by the Boston Bruins 6-4. Columbus has now taken points from 10 of their last 12 games.
No. 3 Star: Logan Couture, San Jose Sharks
Couture picked up his seventh and eighth goals of the season and recorded an assist on Thornton’s fancy empty netter.
Honorable Mention: Mike Richards’ first goal as a Washington Capitals stood as the game winner in a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes. Washington has won nine of their last 10 games. Alex Ovechkin scored his 39th goal of the season to give him 18 in his last 18 games … Matt Beleskey and Loui Eriksson each scored twice in a losing effort for the Bruins … Craig Smith scored the only goal in the shootout as the Nashville Predators edged the Montreal Canadiens 2-1. Pekka Rinne made 28 saves as the Predators set a franchise record with points in their eight straight road game … Vladimir Tarasenko recorded a three-point night for the Blues … The power plays in St. Louis were on fire with the Sharks and Blues combining for four power play goals on eight opportunities.
