Jimmer's back: Fredette inks 10-day Knicks deal
The New York Knicks signed Jimmer Fredette to a 10-day contract on Monday.
A former lottery pick, Fredette has played this season with the Westchester Knicks, the Knicks’ D-League team, averaging 21.8 points and 4.8 assists in 30 games. He scored a record 35 points to be named the MVP of the D-League all-star game earlier this month.
He will be under contract for five games and is eligible for Monday’s home game against the Toronto Raptors.
Fredette, the 2011 national player of the year and NCAA scoring champ out of BYU, hasn’t found a steady role in the NBA. He has been with three NBA teams since being selected by the Sacramento Kings with the 10th overall pick of the 2011 draft.
The signing was expected, as Knicks interim coach Kurt Rambis said the team planned to sign him today when speaking with reporters Friday
“Sometimes it takes players a few years to figure out how to adjust to the game and the NBA level, so we’ll see if he made those adjustments,” Rambis said.
The Knicks (24-33) had 14 players under contract, so they did not have to make a corresponding roster move to add Fredette.
At the end of the 10-day contract, the Knicks will have the option to sign Fredette to a second 10-day pact. Once that second 10-day pact expires, New York would have to sign Fredette for the remainder of the season. NBA rules prohibit teams from signing a player to a third consecutive 10-day deal.
Fredette will likely come off of the bench for New York, where he will be vying for minutes along with reserve guards Langston Galloway, Jerian Grant and Sasha Vujacic.
