Aguero wants to retire at City – sources
Sergio Aguero has informed Manchester City he is willing to finish his career at the Etihad, sources close to both the player and the club have told ESPN FC, and officials no longer worry he has any desire to return to Spain.
The 27-year-old is set to sign a contract extension until 2020, but City believe his relationship with the club and their key figures is now so strong that he is prepared to stay at the club until he retires.
Aguero moved to Manchester from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and, since then, a perceived desire to return to Spain has weighed on the minds of City officials.
Barcelona tried to buy the Argentine in 2014, only to move for Luis Suarez of Liverpool when they couldn’t force the hand of the Etihad hierarchy. Real Madrid still retain an interest in the striker.
Aguero himself has a close friendship with many players in Spain, particularly countryman Leo Messi, and has also been interested in a return for both lifestyle and family reasons.
Over the last two years, however, City have worked hard to strengthen their bond with the player. Relationships are now said by high-level sources to be so good that Aguero fully identifies with the club and fans.
The sources added that Aguero is completely dedicated to the project and is very excited about working with Pep Guardiola.
