Weird injury: Micah Johnson cut his hand removing an avocado pit
Let’s be honest, spring training doesn’t truly begin until someone suffers a weird injury.
And with that said, good news, everyone! Spring training is officially here!
It didn’t take long at all for the first weird injury to occur, and unfortunately for Micah Johnson, he’s the man whose pain brings us the comfort of a new baseball season.

Actually, Johnson’s injury isn’t a real big deal. Otherwise we wouldn’t be joking about it. The Los Angeles Dodgers infielder suffered a cut on his hand that required four stitches, but shouldn’t keep him off the field much, if at all.
As for how Johnson suffered the injury.
Removing an avocado pit can be tricky, but many of the same principles that apply to baseball also apply to a successful removal. Most importantly, one must be properly prepared, including having the proper tools. As many people have noted, there are special knives, spoons and other tools made specifically for a safe and injury-free removal. It’s unknown just how prepared Johnson was, but it is known that he was wounded.
Here’s another well known tip that all infielders are familiar with: Never let the baseball play you, and never let the avocado play you. An aggressive approach is the best approach, because the avocado will bite you if you let it., or worse yet, it will stain your clothes

On a more serious note, Johnson is going to need an exceptional and injury-free camp if he hopes to go north with Los Angeles in April. The 25-year-old came over in the Todd Frazier three-team trade this offseason after hitting .230/.306/.270 in 36 games with the Chicago White Sox. The Dodgers obviously like Johnson, but are so loaded on the infield that he’ll have to stand out like a sore thumb to beat out an established veteran.
The avocado accident isn’t the best possible start, but it’s not the worst start either. Perhaps having all this focus on him now will only make his focus sharper.
