Jerry Dipoto admits he didn’t see eye to eye with Mike Scioscia
not getting along with manager Mike Scioscia. After taking an interim position with the Boston Red Sox in August, Dipoto was eventually hired to run the Mariners.
It’s been a tumultuous past couple of months for Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto. Dipoto was fired by the Los Angeles Angels in July, after reportedly[2016 Yahoo Fantasy Baseball is open for business. Sign up now]
Now that the past is behind him, Dipoto seems to be more willing to talk about some of what went on with Los Angeles. During an interview with MLB Network Radio, he admitted there were times he and manager Mike Scioscia didn’t see eye to eye.
It’s important to note that there was nothing malicious about Dipoto’s comments. He begins by saying he appreciated his time with the Angels, but added that it was tough to do his job properly sometimes because he “was caught in between two different dynamics.”
Later in the conversation, Dipoto praises his current manager Scott Servais for being open to new and different ideas. He says the two have discussed a number of moves, and haven’t always agreed, but he classified those as “healthy” disagreements.
At that point, Dipoto admits, “fair or unfair, that wasn’t always the case with Mike [Scioscia.]” He goes on to add that, as most people eventually found out, the disagreements in Anaheim weren’t always healthy.
Proof that the two didn’t get along isn’t exactly breaking news, but it’s refreshing to see Dipoto talk about the situation. Most executives would completely ignore the past, or try to misdirect the question. Dipoto also deserves credit for not completely trashing Scioscia. His critique was not mean-spirited, and he used the opportunity to praise Servais.

The fact that Dipoto took a job in the same division as the Angels does make for an interesting story line this season, though. Dipoto may not harbor any ill will towards his former organization or Scioscia, but he’s probably going to feel pretty vindicated if the Mariners manage to beat up on the Angels this season.
