Leafs' Komarov ejected for elbowing McDonagh
Leo Komarov could be facing a suspension from the NHL. (MSG)
Ryan McDonagh just returned to the New York Rangers’ lineup after he was sidelined with a concussion. The concussion came from a punch to the head by Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds that did not result in a suspension from the NHL, angering Rangers coach Alain Vigneault.
On Thursday, McDonagh was on the receiving end of another brutal hit, and this time it probably should result in some additional action from the league.
In the first period of their game against the Maple Leafs, McDonagh was elbowed in the head by Leo Komarov on this play.
Komarov received a match penalty for the hit. The Rangers announced that McDonagh will not return to the game for “precautionay reasons.”
Whether the league does anything beyond that is all guesswork because there have been quite a few hits over the past couple of weeks (including a few that resulted in ejections) that seemed like they might warrant some additional discipline but went unpunished.
Komarov has never been suspended in his NHL career.
