And we’re off! Tuesday brought some big news with the first trade this week. Tobias Harris is being traded to Detroit for Ersan Ilyasova and Brandon Jennings.
I’ll be back with the Daily Dose later, but let’s just take a quick look at what happened here. Let’s start with Orlando:
Simply put, the Magic aren’t done this week. They just traded their recently-signed forward for two expiring deals, so they are clearly sellers now. Harris sigend a four-year, $64 million deal over the summer, but now they get to start over and look to bring in a big name in the offseason. It’s puzzling for sure and it’s hard to believe the Magic couldn’t get anything with value for next season. No picks, no cheap players. Very odd.
Getting rid of Harris bodes very well for two players: Aaron Gordon and Mario Hezonja. We’ve finally seen Gordon get freed this past week and he could be a top-60 player going forward. We haven’t seen him bust out on a per-minute basis yet, but now he should be able to do more things offensively. He showed he can be a focal point in the summer and he’s capable of big output.
Mario is getting more run now and he seems like he’ll have a 24-27 minute role right now. The Magic are also going to move more guys, so maybe he plays more on top of that. I’d add him in 14-team leagues to see what happens.
Evan Fournier is also a rock-solid player to own right now. After him, all bets are off. Brandon Jennings should be owned in standard leagues to see what happens as he tries to get a starting job. This also makes it more likely Victor Oladipo is dealt, but he should have great value regardless. This could be bad news for Elfrid Payton, but again the Magic aren’t done. Ghostface Ilya is more of a low-end hold, as well.
Tobias going to SVG’s system is wonderful and he should get going after a quick adjustment period. His usage rate is down this year, but it could potentially improve along with more 3-pointers. He’s always had a high floor in fantasy, so this could help.
This will likely affect Stanley Johnson and Marcus Morris the most. Johnson is playing better, but Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (groin) is back for Friday. I’d rather own Johnson over Morris right now even though Johnson is a bigger risk.
I’ll be back later with more details in tonight’s Daily Dose.
