How Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts’ golf cart ended up underwater
MLB players officially go back to work this week, which means the likelihood of spring-training hijinks will be skyrocketing. So that sort of explains how Mookie Betts, the promising young Boston Red Sox outfielder, ended a round of golf Sunday with his golf cart underwater.

Betts was on the links with Red Sox teammates Travis Shaw and Deven Marrero when their cart, which Betts had been driving, ended up in the drink. The ordeal played out on social media, with pictures and videos disseminating from Twitter, starting with Betts himself:

Given the probability of odd spring injuries, we’re happy to report that no one was injured, unless you count bruised egos and waterlogged cell phones. Betts, having reported early to Red Sox camp in Fort Myers, Fla., recounted the events on Monday to Rob Bradford of Boston’s WEEI:
“I left my club on the last hole and I went back to get it,” Betts explained. “Parked on a hill. Thought I pushed the break, but it didn’t break, obviously. I didn’t push it all the way in. I ran to get my club and by the time I turned around it was going in the pond. That’s pretty much it.”
“That was probably one of the most helpless I felt,” he added. “I don’t know how you want to say it, but there was nothing I could do. I couldn’t pull it out, couldn’t salvage anything — well, we got our wallets, didn’t get our phones, but got our keys. We didn’t really lose anything but phones.”
Let your offseason scorecard show that Betts isn’t great with golf carts, but he did bowl a few perfect games this winter. All things considered, we consider that — wait for it — a wash.
