John Scott showered with ‘MVP’ chants in AHL return
John Scott returned to reality on Saturday night when he took to the ice at Mile One Centre in St. John’s for the Ice Caps’ game against the Toronto Marlies.
Scott’s whirlwind month saw him voted as All-Star captain of the Pacific Division, traded to the Montreal Canadiens, in limbo as to whether or not the trade would affect his All-Star status, named MVP of the All-Star Game following a two-goal performance, and finally, welcome twin girls to the world.
The Ice Caps fans showed their love for Scott with “MVP” chants during 3-1 win, a game that he admitted was a “nerve-wracking” experience.
“I was not good, but the good thing about hockey is everybody has to be good,” Scott said afterward. “We had a lot of good plays, good performances so we won the game and that’s what matters.”
Scott was sporting an ice bag on his shoulder after the game following an awkward fall into the boards. It was the end of a long day. After leaving his family in Michigan on Friday, he landed in St. John’s at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. He hadn’t skated in nearly 10 days, but no one was expecting a repeat MVP performance out of the 33-year old.
The Ice Caps players, however, are expecting one thing out of Scott: free dinner. Before he headed off to Nashville, Scott made a playful bet with his teammates that if he won MVP honor at the All-Star Game he would take the team out for dinner. Well, time to pay up.
“We have a long road trip coming up,” he said. “I’ll try to figure something out, book a restaurant for the guys and the trainers and we’ll go out and have a nice little meal. It’ll be fun.”
Aside from the movie and books deals that he’s letting his agent handle, Scott was given an invite to Toronto to hang out in the city during NBA All-Star Weekend, which he politely declined.
“It would have been fun but you’ve got to get back to work sometime,” he said.
