Gostisbehere sets rookie record, then speared in groin (Video)
One name that’s not appearing often enough in the Calder Trophy discussion: Shayne Gostisbehere. Probably because his last name really hard to spell.
He’s a defenseman playing on the Philadelphia Flyers who was called up nearly a month and a half into the NHL season. In a mere 36 games played, he’s put up 30 points (10-20=30).
He scored point No. 30 on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils. Not only did it tie the game for Philly, the point set a rookie defenseman scoring record. The goal marked the 11-straight game the one the fans call “Ghost Bear” has registered a point.
According to NHL PR, Barry Beck was the previous record holder with two separate 10-game point streaks in the 1977-78 season for the Colorado Rockies.
With his goal, Ghost Bear (a.k.a. 👻🐻) ties Sean Couturier for fourth on the team in scoring, and his 30 points is best among Flyers defenseman.
One person none too impressed with Gostisbehere’s record is Lee Stempniak. Not too long after the rookie scored his goal, the Devils forward gave the kid, to put it nicely, a cup check.
The Department of Player Safety might have something to say to Stempniak about that. Gostisbehere made it over to the bench and shook it off to finish the game.
Alas, the Devils ended up getting the better result. Adam Henrique scored a power play goal in overtime to beat the Flyers.
