BOYS HOCKEY
Swampscott 9, Rockport 1: The second line of captain Peter Doyle (2 goals), Andrew Dove (2 goals, assist) and Thomas O’Keefe (4 assists) all had big nights for the Big Blue (11-8) in a road triumph. Defenseman Dante Ceccarelli chipped in with three assists while Stevie Santanello, Louis Olivieri and Mike Johnson both had a goal and an assist. Freshman Zach Elwell had his first varsity goal for Swampscott, while fellow third liner Kevin Lombard also scored and added one assist. Defenseman Jack Poska bagged a pair of apples as well.
St. John’s Prep 9, St. John’s Shrewsbury 0: Junior Billy Fairweather and sophomore Ryan Farrow both had their first career goals as the Eagles (12-2-3) rolled over the visiting Pioneers. Danny Tighe had a pair of goals, increasing his team lead to 14, with captain Kyle Lynch contributing a goal and three assists. Single snipes came off the sticks of Billy Falter, Dan Hennessey, captain Seth Murray and Paul Edson while Kyle Hentosh and Shawn Thompson each had three assists. Kyle Martin (7 saves), Ben Brophey (8) and Shane O’Brien (5) shared the shutout, with Brophey getting the team’s ‘Hard Hat’ as top performer of the game.
Masconomet 3, Beverly 0: Sal Paci turned aside 12 shots to earn his first career shutout, pushing Masconomet (7-7-1) back to the .500 mark. Assistant captain Nick Pease had a goal and an assist to lead the winners from his spot on defense, while freshman Andrew Gotts and senior Garrett Lafata also scored for Masconomet.
Sophomore Troy Doyle had 26 saves in goal for Beverly (3-9-4), which was officially eliminated from postseason consideration.
Peabody 4, Gloucester 4: With their goaltender pulled in the final minute of play, the Tanners (9-4-4) got the game-tying goal from Ethan LeBlanc with 27 seconds to play, earning a point on the road. Captain Donnie Shaw finished with a goal and two assists for Peabody, with Nick Merryman and Owen Brewster adding a goal and an assist each. Senior Freddy Robitaille came into the game to begin the third period and stopped all nine shots he saw, securing a point for his team.
Northeast Regional 6, Salem 2: Freshman Chris Masta and Zach Fucci (”Zach played outstanding tonight,” said head coach Ted Hanley) had the goals for Salem (3-12-1). J.J. Chauncey assisted on both goals, with captain Eamon Williamson picking up one helper.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Beverly 3, Winthrop 0: Anna O’Neill had two assists to earn her 100th career point as Beverly (13-5) finished league play a perfect 10-0. Izzy Primack had the game winning goal while McKinley Karpa and Kristen McCarthy also scored.
Medford 1, Peabody 0: Freshman Dana Smullen had a strong game in goal, with 25 saves, but Medford scored the winning goal with 1:48 left in the third period as Peabody dipped to 5-10-1 on the season.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Waring 36, Commonwealth School 25: Waring was led by three captains Aidan Wood (20 points), Dylan Macy (eight points,10 rebounds) and Jacob Vaneck (five points) in last night’s GBIL semifinal game.
Gloucester 58, Swampscott 53: Nate Howard scored 15 points off the bench for the Big Blue, while Venantius Phillip added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. Brandon Byrne contributed with a double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Salem 50, Winthrop 27: Nicole Sadoway scored 20 points and played a solid game on the defensive end to help the Witches (7-10) win in a Northeastern Conference makeup game.
Pingree 52, Newton Country Day 43: Kerri Zerfoss scored a game-high 17 points to help the Highlanders improve to 7-6 overall. Meg Foye finished with 15 points and Hannah Stasiuk added eight in the win.
Bishop Fenwick 52, Andover 29: Senior captain Sydney Brennan had 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lift the Crusaders (14-3) on the road. Junior point guard Sam Mancinelli finished with five points, five assists and four rebounds. Senior captain Colleen Corcoran chipped in with 10 points, three rebounds and three steals in the victory.
Pentucket 43, Masconomet 23: Paige Amyouny scored six points and added 13 rebounds for the Chieftains, now 9-6 overall. The Sachems held visiting Masco to six points in the first half. The Chieftains struggled shooting with only seven made baskets in the game.
Beverly 56, Peabody 49: Point guard Melissa Lubas paced the Panthers with 16 points, while junior Natalie Mellinger added 13 points and senior Olivia George chipped in with a dozen. The win qualifies Beverly for the tournament.
The Tanners (8-6) were outscored 18-5 in the first quarter. Melissa Gray scored a team-high 15 points. Katie Wallace had 13 point and Marina DeMild added 10.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Gordon 42, Wentworth 39: Sophie Linnell had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Kristen Smith added a dozen points for the Scots (5-17), who won for the first time in 15 Commonwealth Coast Conference games this season. Sydney Pefanis added nine points in the win and teammate Mariel Barner added seven.
Bridgewater State 82, Salem State 72: A strong showing from Kia Fernandes (19 points, 7 rebounds) wasn’t enough as the Lady Vikings dropped a home decision to their MASCAC rivals. Kaitlyn Bryan contributed 14 points, Tahira Peralta had a dozen and Malissa Saad finished with 10.
University of New England 62, Endicott 54: A career night from freshman guard Catie Lipscomb (15 points, all on 3-pointers) wasn’t enough as Endicott fell on the road to the CCC regular season champions. Senior guard Kelsey Cuddy led the Gulls in scoring with 20 points in addition to her nine rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and a steal.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicot 68, UNE 61: Daquan Sampson had 15 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks lead the to Gulls (13-9) in the road win in Maine. Max Motroniaded added 11 points, while Kamhal Walker finished with 10 points.
Wentworth 69, Gordon 67: Despite Garrisson Duvivier’s 24 ponts and 14 rebounds the Scots lost (11-11) a heart breaker at home.
