Security worker at Houston AAC-clincher charged with assault
A security worker at the University of Houston’s AAC-clinching game against Navy has been charged with misdemeanor assault after he was indicted by a grand jury.
Workers contracted by the security company the school used for football games were captured on video being extremely rough to fans storming the field. Cougar fans were overjoyed about their team’s win over Navy to win the conference and a spot in the Peach Bowl against Florida State. Houston ended up beating the Seminoles to finish the season 13-1.
Derrick Hicks is currently the only employee of Contemporary Services Corporation charged with a crime. However, he may not be the only one. From the Houston Press:
Harris County DA’s Office spokesman Jeff McShan said that office is still investigating other guards who were on the field that day. From several videos, it’s clear that Derrick Hicks wasn’t a lone rogue guard, and from the videos, it’s not clear what the guards thought they could accomplish by singling out and throwing down a couple dozen students as hundreds rushed past them. In some footage, McShan said, some guards appeared to be enticing or challenging students to get on the field.
Houston vice president for athletics Hunter Yurachek said after the game that the school was disappointed in the actions of the security workers and that Houston had terminated its relationship with CSC.
